Dry Eye
At Palm Beach Eye Clinic in West Palm Beach, FL, we offer several different dry eye treatment options to help patients find relief from the symptoms of this common condition. If you suffer from the unpleasant symptoms associated with dry eye disease, we can provide you with a treatment plan to safely and effectively resolve your symptoms.
What Is Dry Eye Treatment?
A dry eye treatment plan is a unique protocol for patients suffering from the symptoms of dry eyes. We offer several different treatment options that can alleviate the negative symptoms of dry eyes, hydrate your eyes, and help improve your comfort and quality of life.
Whether you’ve been suffering from this condition long-term or a recent change in environment, a new medication, or a medical condition that has caused a change in your eyes, resulting in dry eyes, we can evaluate your symptoms and design a treatment plan that’s right for you.
There are many different conditions that contribute to dry eyes. Environment, lifestyle, contact lens use, medical conditions, and inadequate tear production can all contribute to this condition.
Some of the most common symptoms of dry eyes include constant irritation, light sensitivity, formation of mucus within the eyes, burning and scratching sensation, tired eyes, and changes in vision. If you’re suffering from this condition, know that there are effective dry eye treatment options that can alleviate your symptoms and help promote healthier eyes.
Our Treatment Options
Since patients suffer from different degrees of dry eyes, we develop customized treatment plans to address each patient’s symptoms and concerns. Our treatment options are designed to help hydrate your eyes and provide relief without causing any further irritation. An initial consultation will give us a better idea of your symptoms and the severity of your condition so we can recommend the best treatment options to provide you with the relief you need.
Eye drops are also known as artificial tears. They are designed with a specific formula and combination of ingredients to restore adequate moisture to the eyes, improve patient comfort, and alleviate symptoms.
We offer several different types of eye drops that can help patients lubricate their eyes, including prescription medication eye drops. Each product contains a specific combination of ingredients, and some patients may be better suited for one option over another.
RESTASIS® is a brand of eye drops designed to promote natural tear production. It’s specifically designed for patients who suffer from chronic dry eye syndrome, which causes the body to respond to a type of inflammation of the eyes by decreasing overall tear production.
The body’s inability to produce adequate tears can negatively affect the health of the eyes and cause the protective film on the eye to break down. RESTASIS® can prevent this with its unique formula designed to help the body produce natural tears.
How Does It Work?
If you are a good candidate for RESTASIS®, we will instruct you on how to use the product so you can experience the treatment benefits. Patients will be instructed to use the product twice daily at 12-hour intervals.
The active ingredients will begin working to support the body in increasing natural tear production to alleviate the symptoms of your condition long-term. Patients can expect to notice the best results six months after beginning the treatment process and initial results after three months.
Xiidra® is a steroid-free, prescription eye drop medication designed to treat the symptoms of dry eye disease as soon as two weeks after beginning the treatment. The active ingredients in these eye drops will reduce inflammation of the eyes that contributes to dry eye disease and provide lasting relief.
How Does It Work?
Once we prescribe Xiidra® as a treatment for dry eyes, you will administer one drop to each eye twice daily at 12-hour intervals. The product comes in single-use containers that you will discard after application. You can expect to notice an improvement in your symptoms as soon as two weeks after beginning your treatment and a significant improvement in your condition within six to 12 weeks of use.
We also offer punctual plugs as a dry eye treatment option. Punctual plugs are tiny plugs, about the size of a grain of rice. There are two types of punctual plugs: temporary plugs that dissolve over time and semi-permanent plugs.
Once inserted into the tear ducts, these plugs prevent fluid drainage and work to maintain eye moisture and patient comfort. Punctual plugs can alleviate dry eye symptoms, including redness, scratchiness, itchiness, and burning, among others.
How Do They Work?
If you are a good candidate for punctual plugs, we will begin the treatment process by numbing the tear ducts if needed and then inserting the plugs into each duct. The treatment process is quick, and you can resume your normal daily activities once it’s over. If necessary, we can remove plugs as needed, so you aren’t committing to plugs as a permanent solution.
